The source is Public Domain Comic Books, and there are upward of 15,000 books to choose from.
It gives you a list of places where you can see these comic books, and you'll find that they are catalogued according to category and publisher, with details on how many of the series are available, the general physical condition, number of pages for each story, and the download file length.
They are FREE. All you need to do is register.
It also shows a link to the US Copyright Office for details, and an excerpt of their definition for Derivative Works.
Are you concerned about your derived story being considered Plagiaritic?
Well if you straight out copied all the dialogue and what little descriptive text there is, yes it would be.
But it would not work anyway, as the comic story relies almost solely on the illustrations for descriptrive passages,and you are going to trash all but a few illustrations, or maybe all. So by the time you translate all those pictures into words, you have probably accomplished your purpose of creating an original derivative work.
Then the dialogue probably needs to be brought into line with modern day language, or maybe you alter the sequence of events, or the outcome at the end of the story.
